UniFi Protect vs ADT vs Ring: Which Camera System Fits Your Property

UniFi Protect4 min read

UniFi Protect, ADT and Ring all put cameras on a property, but they are three different kinds of product. Ring is a consumer camera brand built around its own cloud. ADT is a security company that sells installed systems with professional monitoring. UniFi Protect is a camera platform that records to hardware you own on site. This is a plain comparison with no prices, because plans and prices change often. Check each company’s current terms before you buy.

We are a UniFi Certified Partner and install UniFi Protect, so read this knowing where we stand. We also service other systems, and we say below where Ring or ADT is the better fit.

Where your video lives

This is the biggest difference. Ring cameras send video to Ring’s cloud. Without a Ring subscription you get live view and alerts, but saved recordings and history need a paid plan. If the internet drops, a cloud camera generally cannot upload what it sees.

UniFi Protect records to a UniFi console or recorder with hard drives at the property. Video stays on your premises, keeps recording when the internet is down, and you view it from the app at home or away. Ubiquiti does not charge a subscription to record or watch your cameras. How many days you keep depends on drives and camera count; our storage planner shows the math, and Protect vs a standalone NVR covers the recorder side.

ADT sits in between and varies by package. ADT systems are usually sold with a monthly monitoring plan, and video features come with that plan. Ask exactly where recordings are kept, for how long, and what happens to the cameras if you cancel.

Wired vs Wi-Fi cameras

Most Ring cameras run on Wi-Fi, many on batteries. That makes them easy to put up yourself, but battery cameras usually record short clips when motion is detected rather than continuous video, and Wi-Fi cameras are only as reliable as the signal at that wall.

UniFi Protect is built around PoE cameras: one Ethernet cable carries power and data, so the camera never needs charging and can record around the clock. That is why a Protect install includes cabling, and why it costs more up front than a box of Wi-Fi cameras. For long driveways, gates and hillside lots, see how we handle cameras on metal posts with long runs.

Monitoring and alarms

ADT’s core product is professional monitoring: a central station that responds to alarms and can dispatch help. Ring also offers professional monitoring for its alarm system as a paid plan.

UniFi Protect does not include a monitoring center. You get smart detections (people, vehicles, packages on supported cameras) and alerts to your phone, and you can set rules with Protect’s alarm features. If you need a monitoring company to respond 24/7, that is a real reason to keep or add one, and a monitored alarm can live next to a Protect camera system.

Doors and the rest of the property

Protect is part of UniFi, so cameras, door access, intercoms and Wi-Fi share one system and one app. A door call can show the camera view and unlock the gate. Ring and ADT have doorbells and some smart-lock links, but they are not built as a full access control system for offices or multi-door properties.

Who each one suits

  • Ring: renters, apartments and small homes where you want a doorbell and a few cameras you can install yourself, and you are fine paying for cloud history.
  • ADT: people whose priority is a monitoring company on call, who are comfortable with a monthly contract.
  • UniFi Protect: homes and businesses that want wired cameras, video kept on site, room to grow to dozens of cameras, and no camera subscription. It is also the fit when you want cameras, doors and Wi-Fi in one system.

Switching to UniFi Protect

Many of our camera jobs replace something older. Existing camera cable is sometimes reusable: in a Downtown LA high-rise we moved 45 cameras onto the building’s existing coax. Wi-Fi camera setups usually need new runs.
