Should a small business pick UniFi Protect, ADT or Ring?
For most small businesses, UniFi Protect keeps the video on a recorder you own, with no camera subscription, and puts cameras, doors and WiFi in one system. ADT and Ring sell 24/7 professional monitoring, which Protect does not include. Pick ADT or Ring if you need someone watching overnight.

Where ADT or Ring makes more sense
- You need a person watching overnight who can request police or fire. ADT and the Ring Pro plan sell that. Protect does not. [1][2]
- You want one company to install, monitor and service the system under one contract. That is how ADT sells it. [1]
- You can't run cable in the space. Our Protect cameras are wired PoE, so if the landlord says no to cable, a wired system is the wrong fit. [3]
- One caution for Ring: smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available at business or commercially zoned addresses. [2]
How we usually set up a shop or office
- On a shop job we put the recorder in the back room or the rack, and every camera gets its own PoE cable back to it. One cable carries power and data. [3]
- If you also want overnight monitoring, keep a monitored alarm next to Protect. The cameras do not need a plan to record. [4]
Common follow-ups
No. Protect records and sends alerts to your phone. If you need a monitoring center, pair it with a monitored alarm or choose ADT or the Ring Pro plan.
Ring says stored recordings are lost and cannot be retrieved if the plan is not paid before it expires.
With UniFi, yes. Protect cameras, UniFi Access doors and UniFi WiFi are managed in one system.
