What a professional setup includes
A professional setup is more than plugging devices in. It covers planning, cabling, configuration and, on request, support after the install. Poorly built networks mean downtime, slow connections and security gaps, and they are expensive to fix later.
On new runs we use solid-copper CAT6 for cameras and CAT6A for data drops and Wi-Fi access points. Every cable is routed and documented, so maintenance and upgrades are straightforward.
UniFi gives us central management and monitoring, and it ties in with UniFi Protect for cameras. A multi-tenant office, for example, gets a segmented network with VLANs that separate each tenant’s traffic.
Setting up a CCTV camera on your network
Start with cameras that support Power over Ethernet (PoE), so one Ethernet cable carries power and data. Then plan camera placement to cover the key areas with as few blind spots as possible.
We put cameras on their own VLAN so video traffic does not compete with everything else, and we use UniFi Protect to view live feeds and recordings from any device. Each camera cable is run through conduit where needed and terminated at a patch panel, which makes it easy to add cameras or move to higher resolution models later.
