AP upgrade: power and port speed
Four new U7 Pro XGS went onto the old ports. The budget is fine. The ports are wrong.
Your job: give each XGS a port that matches it in power and link speed.
This run: four U7 Pro XGS on the old ports 1 to 4. Ports 13 to 16 are free.
Lab complete. All four XGS are on PoE++ ports 13 to 16.
Right port, right powerPorts
USW-Pro-Max-16-PoEUnderpowered: XGS needs PoE++. Ports 1 to 4 are PoE+.

Why this fails
Ports 1 to 4: PoE+
The XGS is specified for PoE++ and draws up to 29W. PoE+ delivers at most 25.5W to the device. Same port, newer AP, not enough power.
Link: 1 GbE
Ports 1 to 12 on this switch are also 1 GbE. Everything that AP's clients do shares that 1 Gbps link. Ports 13 to 16 are PoE++ and 2.5 GbE, so one move fixes both.
Fix: move all four to ports 13 to 16.
Field note
The switch budget was fine all along: 116W fits in 180W. Check the port, not just the total.
Glossary
- PoE+
- 802.3at. Up to 25.5W to the device.
- PoE++
- 802.3bt Type 3. Up to 51W to the device.
- PoE Availability
- The total PoE power the switch can share across its ports.

Takeaway
Right port, right powerMatch the port to the AP. Power and speed.
The XGS needs PoE++. Ports 1 to 12 are PoE+ and 1 GbE. Ports 13 to 16 are PoE++ and 2.5 GbE, so one move fixes both.
- Check the AP's PoE class. The XGS draws up to 29W and needs PoE++.
- Check the port, not just the total. 116W fit in 180W all along.
- Move to a PoE++ port. Here that is ports 13 to 16, at 2.5 GbE.
- Full 10G is a bigger job. A 10G PoE++ switch and Cat6A runs.
