What it is

What a professional Wi-Fi site survey is

A Wi-Fi site survey measures how wireless signals behave across a real property. Walls, glass, appliances, and your neighbors’ networks all change how Wi-Fi moves, so a survey measures your actual space instead of guessing.

Ekahau, the maker of the survey tools we use, describes a survey as collecting radio frequency data on coverage, signal strength, interference, and network performance. Software then turns those measurements into heat maps on a floor plan, so weak spots and crowded channels are easy to see.

A router or controller dashboard tells you about the equipment. It does not measure how the signal behaves in each room. A survey does. Source: Ekahau, Wi-Fi Survey 101

01 / WHEN YOU NEED ONE

When a Wi-Fi site survey makes sense

Swapping in more access points rarely fixes a problem you have not measured. These are the usual reasons people call us.

01

Dead zones and slow rooms

Wi-Fi works in some rooms and drops in others, or video calls freeze in a particular spot. A survey shows where the signal falls off and why.

02

Dropped calls while you move

Phones and laptops hang on to a distant access point instead of handing off to a closer one. Roaming measurements show where that happens.

03

A new UniFi system is coming

Measure what is already on the air first, so access point locations and counts come from data instead of a guess.

04

You just finished an install

Confirm coverage room by room after the access points are mounted, and fix anything before it becomes a complaint.

05

Large or tricky buildings

Stone, stucco, glass, metal framing, multiple floors, and detached guest houses or offices all change how far a signal carries.

06

Crowded neighborhoods

In dense areas your channels can overlap with neighbors’ networks. Channel findings and a channel plan help you stand out less.

02 / SURVEY TYPES

Predictive and on-site surveys, in plain words

Three terms you will hear. They answer different questions.

01

Predictive

A computer model. The floor plan, wall materials, and access point models go into design software, which estimates coverage before anything is installed. It is a plan for the building, not a measurement of it.

02

On site, passive

The surveyor walks the space with a measuring device. It listens to the access points already on the air without sending test traffic, and records signal strength, signal to noise, channel use, and interference as it moves.

03

On site, active

A device connects to the network and sends test traffic while measurements are taken. This shows what the connection actually delivers: speed, delay, lost packets, and how well devices roam between access points.

03 / THE TOOLS

Ekahau AI Pro and Sidekick 2

What Ekahau says these tools do.

01

Ekahau Sidekick 2

The measuring device. Ekahau lists 4 tri-band Wi-Fi radios that scan the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, 9 antennas, and a spectrum analyzer that sweeps up to 50 times per second. It pairs with an Android or iOS device, or with a laptop.

02

Ekahau AI Pro

Ekahau’s design and analysis software. Ekahau lists creating predictive network designs, inspecting collected survey data, and generating reports among what it does.

03

Spectrum analysis

Wi-Fi is not the only thing on the air. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, wireless headsets and cameras, and Bluetooth devices can share Wi-Fi frequencies. Wi-Fi measurements alone may miss them, so Ekahau recommends a spectrum analyzer such as Sidekick 2 when deploying or troubleshooting a wireless network.

Ekahau: non-Wi-Fi interference

04

Built for 6 GHz

Ekahau says Sidekick 2 can scan, survey, and troubleshoot 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6E networks, along with 2.4 and 5 GHz.

04 / WHAT YOU RECEIVE

What you receive

We measure signal strength, signal to noise, channel overlap, and dead zones and roaming. You get:

01

Coverage heat maps

Heat maps on your floor plan show where Wi-Fi signal is strong and where it drops, room by room.

02

Access point plan

Where access points should go, and how many you need. Where a new access point needs cable, we run CAT6A to it.

03

Interference and channel findings

Which channels are crowded, by your network and by your neighbors’, plus a recommended channel plan.

04

A written report

Plain-language findings you can read without a networking background. The report is yours to keep.

How a survey runs

01Walk the property

We walk every room with the Sidekick 2, recording as we go.

02Analyze

We review coverage, noise, channel use, and interference in every band.

03Report

You get heat maps and plain-language findings.

04Recommendations

Access point placement and count, plus a channel plan.

05 / ON ITS OWN OR WITH AN INSTALL

On its own, or with an install

A

As a standalone service

A separate, paid service for properties with Wi-Fi already in place: dead zones, dropped calls, or slow rooms. You do not need to hire us to install anything, and the report is yours to keep.

B

With an installation

Before an install, a survey shows what is already on the air. After an install, it confirms coverage room by room. When a survey is in scope for your project, we do it as part of the installation work. Ask us when we scope your project.

Good to know: when you request an installation estimate, the site walkthrough scopes the work. It is not a survey and does not include Wi-Fi measurements. Planning a new UniFi system? A survey pairs well with a UniFi installation. See how we build UniFi networks on our UniFi installer page, or read about Wi-Fi installation and structured cabling.

Who it is for
Homes and estates

Existing Wi-Fi with dead zones, dropped calls, or slow rooms, including outbuildings, or a new system you want to plan before you buy.

Offices

Business sites where people and devices rely on Wi-Fi in every room.

Warehouses

Large spaces where devices move around and need to keep their connection as they roam between access points.

Venues

Places where many devices connect at once and nearby access points can compete for the same channels.

FAQ
What is a Wi-Fi site survey?

It measures how wireless signals behave across a physical space: signal strength, interference, channel use, and network performance. The results appear as heat maps on a floor plan.

Is your site walkthrough a survey?

No. The site walkthrough scopes an installation and does not include Wi-Fi measurements. A survey is a separate service.

Do I have to hire you to install anything?

No. A survey is a separate, paid service and the report is yours to keep.

Why not just check the router or controller dashboard?

A dashboard shows access point status, connected devices, and settings. It does not measure how the signal behaves across your rooms. A survey does.

Can a survey find interference that is not Wi-Fi?

Yes, with spectrum analysis. Sidekick 2 has a spectrum analyzer for the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, and Ekahau lists microwave ovens, cordless phones, and wireless headsets among the non-Wi-Fi devices that can share Wi-Fi frequencies.

Does it cover 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6E?

Yes. Ekahau says Sidekick 2 can scan, survey, and troubleshoot 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6E networks, as well as 2.4 and 5 GHz.

Is a predictive design enough on its own?

A predictive design is an estimate from a model. Ekahau notes that a survey after installation verifies that the installed network delivers the coverage users need, so a measured survey is how you confirm it.

Does Ekahau software work with UniFi?

Ekahau lists Ubiquiti among the Wi-Fi brands that AI Pro is optimized for.

How much does a survey cost?

A Home Survey for a property up to about 3,000 sq ft is $750. An Estate Survey for about 3,000 to 8,000 sq ft, including outbuildings, is $1,250. Commercial sites are quoted per site. It is a separate, paid service and the report is yours to keep.

Can you survey before I buy a new system?

Yes. A survey before an install shows what is already on the air, so the access point plan starts from measurements. Our UniFi Design packages pair well with it.

Do you survey outside Sherman Oaks?

Yes. We are based in Sherman Oaks and survey properties across all of LA Metro, including Encino and the rest of the San Fernando Valley.
