Face or blur?

Pick a UniFi camera and a distance. See if you get a face, a blur, or a plate.

Detail on camera is about pixels per meter on the target, not just 4K on the box. A wide lens spreads its pixels across a wide view, so faces get small fast. This tool uses the published resolution and lens angle of each UniFi camera and the pixel density bands from the IEC 62676-4 standard: Identify, Recognize, Observe and Detect.

Face: maybe.

You will know someone you already know. A stranger's face will be soft.

Identify to about 17 ft. Recognize to about 35 ft.

Our estimate using the IEC 62676-4 pixel density bands and Ubiquiti published specs. Real results depend on light, angle and focus.

Questions

How far away can a UniFi camera identify a face?

A 4K G6 Bullet with its wide lens reaches identify density (250 px/m) out to about 18 ft. Zoom models on Tele reach about 60 ft. These are our estimates from Ubiquiti specs.

What is pixels per foot?

How many image pixels cover one foot of the scene at a given distance. More pixels per foot means more detail. Identify needs about 76 px/ft.

Does 4K mean I can see faces farther?

Only if the lens is the same. A wide 4K camera spreads its pixels across a wide view, so a narrower lens on the same sensor sees farther.

Can a regular camera read license plates?

Sometimes in daylight and close. At night, moving cars and glare need an LPR camera placed at the right angle.

Why does my camera look worse at night?

The built-in infrared light has a range limit and color drops out. Past that range detail falls off fast.

Is this the same as a site walk?

No. It is a quick check. On a walk we measure the real distances, light and mounting points.
