UniFi Upgrade
A high-end residential client in Los Angeles sought to modernize their outdated home network.
The existing setup relied on a single Spectrum modem hidden in a closet, paired with an old, cluttered white datacom cabinet and decades of tangled cabling that made maintenance nearly impossible.
Gbit Tech transformed the space into a clean, organized, enterprise-grade UniFi ecosystem capable of supporting 4K streaming, smart home devices, remote work, and future expansion - all without ongoing subscription fees.
Challenges

Legacy white datacom cabinet was overcrowded and poorly organized, with decades-old coax, phone, and Ethernet runs tangled together.

Limited wired drops and inconsistent WiFi coverage throughout the multi-level home.

No centralized, scalable core - everything ran off a basic consumer modem/router combo.

Client desired a professional, maintainable setup that looked clean and allowed easy future additions.
Solutions

We reused as much existing in-wall cabling as possible to minimize disruption and cost, while completely removing the outdated cabinet and untangling decades of legacy wiring.

Key components installed:
Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro Max – core gateway, controller, and firewall
Switch Pro Max 24 PoE – high-performance PoE switching for access points and future devices
Data drops – professionally terminated to a patch panel for whole-home wired connectivity
4 × U7 Pro Wall Access Points – connected via 2.5 Gbps links for blanket WiFi 7 coverage and seamless roaming
10 Gbps DAC cable – direct high-speed backbone link between UDM Pro Max and Switch
All equipment was mounted on a sleek Middle Atlantic VPM-4 4U vertical bracket with dedicated venting space, creating an organized, service-friendly rack hidden in the original closet location.
Results

The client now enjoys seamless multi-gigabit wired and wireless connectivity throughout the entire home, with zero dead zones and rock-solid performance for streaming, video calls, and smart devices.
The clean installation eliminated the “rat’s nest” look, making future upgrades or troubleshooting straightforward.
The subscription-free UniFi platform gives full ownership and control, saving hundreds annually compared to cloud-based alternatives.
The homeowner noted: “It’s night and day - everything just works, and the closet finally looks professional instead of chaotic
